Trace in 90 seconds

JJ, co-founder of Trace, explains the two sides of Trace: the free app that tells you what movie a clip is from, and the audience intelligence that shows streamers and distributors which catalogue titles people are asking for.

Lightly edited for readability from what JJ says in the film.

Hello everyone, my name is JJ. I'm the co-founder and the chief marketing officer of Trace.

Trace comes in two layers as a business. The first layer is the user layer, which is our consumer app, which you can find on the App Store or the Play Store. Our consumer app basically works along the lines of a Shazam for movies: if you're scrolling on TikTok or Reels and you come across a movie clip and you cannot find the name of the movie, you just share it to our app and we tell you the name of the movie, the year it was released and where you can watch it.

This leads me on to my second point, which is our audience intelligence platform, the second layer of the business. A lot of the media houses and a lot of the streamers right now are only looking at certain metrics to gauge whether they can re-license a film. These metrics include the box office numbers of a film, how it did at the box office, or the taste of the people they're serving. What they don't really look at is social media, and what social media is saying about certain films: whether it is wise to re-license them, or whether it is wise to sell them again to certain areas.

What we do is we monitor social media and aggregate the data we find there about movies, and we help streamers and film distributors make better decisions through this data.

We're already in conversation with studios and streamers. We're trying to help them make better decisions in terms of their catalogue. No one else is doing what we're doing in terms of audience demand intelligence.
